7th round of the 38th Lebanese Individual Chess Championship

Faisal Khairallah….SOLO

The long awaited encounter between the leaders of the tournament, Antoine Kassis (White) and Faisal Khairallah occurred on table 6 of this 7th round of the championship. Faisal surprised Antoine by adopting the Modern Defense, a very flexible opening, reaching a Dragon variation setup with better prospects than the normal moves order. As Antoine’s pieces were watching their opposite ones centralized, a new black passed pawn emerged on the d-file, promoted to a queen, forcing Antoine to resign.

The readers of my article about the 12 gladiators, dated 3rd of December, remember very well what I mentioned was Ahmad Najjar’s nick name. Yes, the Mighty-Lucky. His encounter on table 4, using the black pieces, with Tarek Moudallal was very tense and exciting. In order to stop Tarek’s passed pawn, a provocative move from the later let Ahmad’s concentration slip for just one move, and the black night on f4 was lost. Ahmad continued the game as if nothing happened, and even created winning chances with a piece less. An imprecise move from his part gave Tarek the opportunity to exchange the remaining materials in order to reach a theoretical drawn pawn ending.

We will go back to table 1,which witnessed the match between Bassel Sharaf (White) and Amr ElJawish. After just 3 moves, the players are out of theory, permitting Black to quickly equalize the position. Then, Amr started playing some inferior moves, which gave Bassel the initiative for a long number of moves, and an advantage on the clock, reaching at a certain moment more than 30 minutes. Amr, with his shortage of time, succeeded to untangle himself, and even equilize the position. In order to pressurize the position on his opponent, Bassel managed to create a passed pawn on the king side. But Amr succeeded in a great skill to restrain it,and even in creating one of his own. Surprised by the turn of events, Bassel lost his concentration, his passer, and the game point.

On table 2, Dr. Mahmoud Maasarani, playing black against Amir AbouElHusn, obtained and small but endurable initiative as long as the game duration. He succeeded in capturing a white pawn on the kingside, and his king side ones were free to advance, forcing Amir to resign.

The table 3 witnessed just one move blunder from Jammal Shamiyeh (Black) which would allow his opponent, Mahdi Kaouri, to win the black queen on a discovered check. Jammal, with great sportsmanship, stopped the clocks.

The encounter on table 5 between the 2 young players, Ibrahim Chahrour (white) and Mohammad mikati was interesting. Mohammad, still looking for his first point in the event, obtained a very acceptable position. Then, a series of imprecise moves enabled his opponent to seize the initiative and construct and attacking position. The passive setup of the black pieces, added with threats of tactical strokes from the white ones, pushed Mohammad to throw away some materials, and admitting the loss.
