Round 7 of the Lebanese Individual Chess Championship 2013 – Final Stage

Chahrour leads by half point

With his win over Nadim Hammoud, Ibrahim Chahrour took the lead alone in the after round 7 standing of the Lebanese Championship, profiting from the loss of Dr. Mahmoud Maasarani on the hands of Amr ElJawich and the draw result of Antoine Kassis with Faisal Khairallah.

Nadim adopted the Accelerated Dragon, to be confronted with the Maroczy bind, creating a firm control on the light central squares. Possibly Nadim mixed the moves order, as letting Ibrahim exchanging his knight for e6-bishop is considered a big strategic concession. Nadim tried to liquidate the center, to find himself a pawn down, then a piece down. Disposing his arms was the right decision he took.

On board 1, a clash of 2 opposite styles was taking place. Dr. Mahmoud Maasarani adopted the Caro-Kann against the 1.e4 of Amr ElJawish, who replied with the Fantasy variation, a variation that pushed the former to spend more than one hour of his allotted time for the first 7 moves. Dr. Maasarani tried to find a solution to his problem, a solution that could be found if his king was safe. With the threat of being mated on the next move was enough reason to stop the suffering. This game represents the shortest miniature played in the championship, till now.

Every one, nearly, was expecting from Bassel Charaf the win over Maya Jallaoul, especially after netting a pawn, ta passed one, the bishop pair and open files for his heavy pieces. But a surprise was awaiting him: Maya succeeded in exchanging all the pieces, and kept the dark squares bishop forming a fortress on the same squares, nullifying the effect of Bassel’s white bishop and passed pawn. Bassel tried to break through with his king, but Maya stood firm, forcing Bassel to share the game point with Maya.

AbdelAziz ElMahmoud – Tarek Moudallal game was the first to finish. An unusual line of the King’s Indian attack was presented on the board. A couple of imprecise moves by Tarek were refuted by AbdelAziz, who started an attack on the white squares weakness around Tarek’s king. A concluding rook sacrifice was landed by AbdelAziz, eliminating the defender of those same squares, completing the beautiful picture on the board. Faced with mating threats from every side, Tarek stopped the clock. A nice game by AbdelAziz, who made from this game his first victory in this championship.

The encounter between Antoine Kassis and Faisal Khairallah is always exciting. The Grivas/Taimanov line of the Open Sicilian needs full preparation, even on the highest level of chess. The 13..Rd8? (Instead of the theoretical/normal 13..Be5) could cost Faisal too dearly. Tony missed 14.c4 !! with a quick win, and played instead the weaker 14 NxB, which gave Faisal the return back strongly to the game. An unclear middle game issued, offering chances for both side. The issued complications made the time trouble an important factor, influencing the decision making of both players. Although Tony emerged with a pawn up, exchanging all pieces except the bishops resulted in sharing the point.

The Ahmad Najjar – Marwan Nassar game was the last one to finish. An interesting middle game, with isolated d-pawn, was a typical result of the Queen’s Gambit Accepted opening. A long maneuvering phase resulted, where every party was trying to win. In a Queen+Knight vs. Queen+Bishop dynamic endgame, where every side has a passed pawn, Ahmad declined the draw offered by Marwan, relying on the better prospect and coordination of the Knight with the Queen. Exhausted by the knight jumps and maneuvering pieces, Marwan made some inaccurate moves, enabling Ahmad’s pieces to construct a mating attack around Marwan’s king, forcing the later to resign. A captivating game, typical of Ahmad Najjar ‘s power handling of the knight ending.
