Round 5 of Zonal 3.1 – Doha 2013

Fadi drew, Maya lost to the X-World Champion

Round 5 is a special round, as it stands between the 2 halves of the zonal. Fadi, playing White against the Jordanian IM Sami Khodr Safarini, ,chose the Scotch Opening, and especially a variation that leads, after a couple of spectacular sacrifices, to a draw by perpetual check. Possibly both players wanted to adjust and re-fuel their tanks at this turning point round.

It is not every day that we have the opportunity to face a World Champion over the board. And a special preparation is highly needed to be ready theoretically and psychologically for this distinguished encounter. Maya, playing Black against the Qatari Grand Master (yes, Men title, not a Women one) x-World Champion Zhu Chen, adopted the King’s Indian Defense, a good sign for her fighting approach. Zhu replied using the Samisch variation. Then, suddenly, Black’s knights started jumping backward. And just not to let the Queen get jealous from the blind pieces, started its folk dance: d8-a5-b6-c7-a5 (again)-d8-b6, to reach b4, and perished there. During all those dances, Zhu was improving the coordination of her pieces, setting the batteries, and, at the appropriate moment, a break-through in the center, followed by a well-calculated sacrifice forced Maya to call it a day.

Just to be fair, the Lebanese delegation consists just of Maya and Fadi, I mean just players. No trainer or assistant or chief of delegates is accompanying them, not like the UAE or Qatari team, who, in addition to their professionalism and high budgeting projects, have in their crew trainers in the caliber of super Grand Masters, like Victor Bologan , Alexi Kuzmin,  Vladimir Akopian or Edvins Kengis, who each one of them represents the Soviet School by itself.

My advice, after a loss, is: Think positive. You gained experience.
