Round 6 of Zonal 3.1 – Doha 2013

A bad round for the Lebanese players

This is the least of what I can say about my impression of the play of the Lebanese players. Maya, facing with the White pieces the Iranian WIM Mitra Hejazipour, adopted again (??) the English opening. After some 14 moves or so, they reached a middle game position where Black is at least equal, but with a clear plan: attacking White’s queen side. Some tactical exchanges on that side of the board lead to slide a black rook on White’s 2nd rank, confirming how much Black’s position is so advantageous. Blundering a piece after a couple of moves forced Maya to resign.

Is the 274 Elo points difference the cause? Bad preparation? Accommodation/Organization? Lack of training and/or practice? Opponents’ readiness for this type of high-level events? All combined together? Let’s wait Maya’s reply.

On the hand, Fadi, playing also White against the Kuwaiti Bader Al-Hajiri, tried to surprise his opponent by adopting a special version of the Belgrde Gambit, i.e.; inserting a3/a6 in the position. The Kuwaiti player reacted solidly, put his king in safe place, and reached a middle game position with chances for both sides. Fadi tried to induce weaknesses in his opponent’s camp, but Bader was up to the task, and even succeeded in provoking weaknesses on the light squares around Fadi’s king. Fadi tried to seek salvation in the end-game phase by trying to exchange  queens, a strategy that Bader avoided, then with a skillful queen maneuver on the queen side, started collecting the white pawns. Fadi couldn’t but to dispose his arms.

So, remains 3 rounds to go; 3 points for each of Maya and Fadi to collect. Please do it.
