40th Lebanese Individual Championship – Final Stage – Round 7

Round 7: A Marathon Round

With 6 hours of play and 124 moves executed on board 3, Bassel Charaf and Faisal Khairallah demonstrated what the Lebanese players can do. A highly technical endgame arose, where Faisal kept the pressure; by sacrificing his knight for Black’s 2 remaining pawns, Bassel kept his chances alive, hoping that he can apply the 50-moves rule in order to save his half point.  Accentuated by the time pressure, Faisal was on the edge of snatching the point, when an inaccuracy on move 112 (!) enabled Bassel to save his king, and reached his goal. This is possibly the longest game, by time and moves, played in a Lebanese  championship.

On board 1, another tense battle was taking place between Marwan Sharbel and Dr. Mahmoud Maasarani. After a certain inaccuracy in the opening from Mahmoud’ side, Marwan got an edge that extended to the middle game phase. With a pawn down, Mahmoud seek salvation in Queen+Bishop vs Queen+knight ending. A moment of hesitation from Marwan’ side  gave Mahmoud the moment needed to launch a mating attack against the white king, forcing Marwan to resign.

Another interesting battle occurred on board 2 between Elie Asmar and AbdelAziz Mahmoud. After the opening phase, the later emerged with a positional and material advantages, Elie tried to counter attack in a somewhat inferior game, and managed to create some threats against AbdelAziz ’king.  At the critical moment, the offer of the draw initiated by Elie was accepted by abdelAziz, who could continue the play without apparent risk. We are still waiting from these 2 players their first win in this championship.

The illness that hit Khaled Shihab forced him to forfeit his game against Ahmad Najjar on board 4, and to withdraw from the championship. This means that the championship will continue with 11 players. The pairing will not be affected, nor the rating deviations of the players, just Khaled’ score will be cancelled in calculating the players’ final standing.

A different and bizarre story occurred on board 5 between Antoine Kassis and Amr ElJawish. Antoine played for the first time 1.d4, as a surprising weapon against Amr, to be countered by the later in adopting the Dutch defense, a surprise for a surprise. After two and half hours of play, the 2 players were still in their first 5 moves. Were they trying to calculate all the opening theory? Only both of them can answer the question. Later, they stepped on it, and after some exchanges, the draw was agreed in a balanced middle game.

An attacking game is what Ibrahim Chahrour was after in his confrontation with Jamal Shamieh on board 6. He succeeded in creating some problems for Jamal. But the later defended very well, and annihilated all Ibrahim’s threats, to reach an equal endgame. The draw couldn’t be avoided.
