Round 1 of the 42nd Lebanese individual Chess Championship 2016

The experience and the rating dominated …almost

I said (almost) because the first game to finish with a draw result was between Antoine Kassis and Mohamad Habash. Antoine adopted his usual Grand Prix Attack against his new comer opponent’ Sicilian defense, an attack that was easily repulsed. Even Mohamad got the initiative and started his counter-attack. Possibly Antoine’s smart draw offer (experience) on move 21, in a somewhat inferior position, suited Mohamad’s mind frame, as making a tie in the first round against a higher rated player would give him a nice start in the championship. It seems the 30 moves rule is not applied in this event.

The other game that finished quickly was between the current champion Amr ElJawich and Mohamad Farhat, who used the Scandinavian defense, a trendy system used in the Lebanese circuit. After a dozen of theoretical moves, with long castling from each side, a short aggression from the champion provoked a couple of mistaken replies form Farhat, and a total collapse followed (experience and rating).

It seems that the high tension got from Giorgio Kaloust with his game against Mahdi Kaouri. Dropping a pawn in the opening, the exchanging pieces when the opposite should be done, and entering a ending with a pawn down with a bad bishop versus a good knight, to finish with a zugzwang in a pawn endgame, all those were too much a weight that Giorgio ‘shoulders can hold (experience and rating).

A complicated and interesting game of the English opening was played between AdbulAziz Mahmoud and Gen, Hassan Jouni. So complicated that at a certain moment each contender was trying to attack the other. The sacrifice of a knight for 2 pawns that Gen. Jouni made was nicely refuted by AbdelAziz, who succeeded in liquidating the position into a winning endgame. The rating effect wasn’t present here, but the (experience) was.

The last game to finish was between 2 giants: Faisal Khairallah and Ahmad Najjar. A King’s Indian Attack gave Faisal a long and lasting advantage despite the usual initiative that Ahmad obtained on the queen side. The exchange of all heavy pieces could lead to a peaceful result, but Ahmad declined the exchange of queens, a mistake that Faisal exploited to the full by netting a valuable pawn on the queen side. The loss of this pawn woke up the dormant giant of defense of Ahmad, whose knights’ jumps and active king dazzled Faisal’s knights, pushing them to defensive duties. Although the extra pawn still present on the king’s side and in Faisal pocket, a draw was agreed after a 3-times repetition, in a position where he may try to continue to annoy his opponent. The (experience) has its final word.

The sad news about the withdrawal of Elie Asmar from the competition gave Tarek Moudallal an early free day.
