Round 6 of the 42nd Lebanese individual Chess Championship 2016

An uncompromising round

It seems that the players, in this round, forgot the meaning of the word (peace), except one player (to be mentioned later in the report). And the funny thing about the games is that all the players with the black pieces adopted in their opening the fianchetto system of their dark squares bishop, with good and bad results.

The English opening adopted by Mahdi Kaouri, against Mohamad Farhat, netted him a small but tangible advantage, especially with the possession of the bishop pair. The conversion of this advantage into a material one, a pawn, put a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Mohamad, as he needed to play very imprecise moves in a heavy pieces ending where his king felt uncomfortable. A mistake in the defense enabled Mahdi to drag the black king down the board in preparation for the mating strike, an enough reason for Mohamad to stop the clock.

After some 10 moves or so in the Alapin-Sveshnikov variation of Sicilian defense, Tarek Moudallal, playing White against Mohamad ElHabash, obtained a stable advantage that extended to the middle game stage, as well as in the endgame due to the passive play of his opponent. When the 2 extra pawns were ready to start rolling, it was time for Black to stop the clocks. I am surprised by the declining play of Mohamad after his exciting play in the starting rounds of the event. May be a lack of preparation? Tiredness? It is not every day that the opportunity arises to play in the best national event.

The Fianchetto system, played by the young Giorgio Kaloust against the King’s Indian defense of Antoine Kassis, is a proof that Giorgio is in a good way to construct a solid and ambitious repertoire, regardless on the game result. When at a certain moment he lacked a plan, Antoine adopted the thematic initiative on the king side, an initiative that enabled him to collect a pawn. The endgame reached after the exchange of queens was difficult for Giorgio to hold, especially with a black rook hovering his 2nd rank, a centralized and active black knight against the useless white bishop, not to mention Antoine’s king marching in the center. The clear path of the black queen side pawns was enough reason for Giorgio to resign his game.

Possibly the game between Gen. Hassan Jouni and Ahmad Najjar is the game that forced the later to give his best on the board. The game was most of the time well balanced for both side, even when reaching the endgame phase with a bishop against knight. Although Ahmad’s centralized king and active knight are 2 critical factors against the dark squares bishop of Gen. Jouni, it was his weak defensive moves, most probably caused by time pressure, that led to his defeat, otherwise there could be another story.

It is for sure that the game AbdulAziz Mahmoud – Amr ElJAwish is the first candidate game to enter the lot for winning the prize of the (most beautiful game of championship 2016). The Modern Defense adopted by Amr against the peaceful (!) AbdelAziz’ English Opening led to lively game. The former held his king in the center for a while, profiting from the presence of his rook on the h-file. The sacrifice made by Amr of the knight for just a pawn, but most importantly for an open h-file and a queen infiltration on the king side, was so creative that pushed AbdelAziz to find and then construct what it seems a solid defense. The coming of the other rook to the battle, after castling long, was very welcomed by the other pieces to join the party (Yasser Seirawan’s proverb that has a great emphasize on planning/fueling an attack). After this, the technique of finishing the game was very constructively made by Amr (Dear reader, please don’t tell Amr that my Komodo engine found a mat in 10 on move 33).
