Round 10 of the 43rd Lebanese Individual Championship 2017

A cautious round

Except Ahmad Najjar – Ralph Khairallah game, it seems the contenders want to play for a win and hold their position on the board in a cautious way, without making any adventure. Indeed, it is the first time in this championship that most of the games finished in less than 4 hours play. As the packing in the top standing is getting more condensed, this yields to the conclusion that the final 11th round will be crucial to the final standing, expecting a high tension voltage to strike on all boards.

The Alatorsev variation of the Queen’s Gambit Declined didn’t give Ahmad any tiny advantage, as Ralph played the opening and the early middle game in a perfect way. It was just a little slip that allowed Ahmad to start an initiative on Ralph’s king side. The sacrifice of the white knight on h6 was too difficult to refute, as the black king was exposed on the light squares, which were dominated by Ahmad’s queen and bishop, which coordinated perfectly. The resulting loss of materials forced Ralph to resign.

The games Amr El Jawish – Elie Asmar, Marwan Nassar – Mahdi Kaouri and Marwan Sharbel – Tarek Moudallal didn’t get out the boundary of solid play and maintained balance, with little exception of the later one where some interesting play by Sharbel and Moudallal in the opening stage could be exploited in a better way by each of them. Anyway, the peace signature saved a lot of energy of them, in preparation for the ultimate round.

The games Antoine Kassis – Samir Sursock and Faisal Khairallal – AbdelAziz Mahmoud have another story. Samir’s 2 bishops could give their owner an easy endgame, except the imprecise sequence of moves that enabled Antoine to create a passed pawn that was too difficult to prevent it from queening.

The same scenario, creation of the passed pawn, was written by Faisal, but with a dominating knight, rook and white squares bishop vs AbdelAziz passive knight, a useless dark squared bishop and an overloaded rook. Stopping the clocks by Samir and AbdelAziz was a wise decision.
