Round 3 of the 43rd Lebanese Individual Championship 2017

Progress on several levels

With every played round in this Final, I noticed something interesting: Progress or increasing of occurrence of certain topics or symptoms or types of moves. The tenacity of the players increased, the Opening preparation improved, the endgame phase occurred more often, the time trouble is becoming more frequent, the number of moves per game increased, as well as the bad handwriting of moves. On the other hand, the number of decisive games remains the same per round, with equal share between White and Black, with just one draw per round. The only thing that decreased, but still occur, is the number of blunders. Is it a good sign or bad one? Is it due to the lack of Classical tournaments participation or the eagerness to play chess and everyone is trying to give the most of his inner? The coming rounds may answer those questions.

I will limit myself to a very short briefing of each encounter.

A draw between Ahmad Najjar and Marwan Nassar, where the later had an extra pawn with possibility to play. Tiredness or lack of calories?

Board 2 witnessed an interesting battle in the Vienna Opening between Antoine Kassis and Marwan Charbel. The former creates a nice attacking position without castling against Black’s castled king, which he crowned with a very nice queen sacrifice. Increase of calculation or passivity in defense?

Board 3 was a scene of a dramatic game. After obtaining a clear advantage against the French defense of Mahdi Kaoury, Amr ElJawish threw away what he accumulated, to reach an equal pawn endgame, and then jettison the game point due to a time trouble move. Increase of stress? Of tenacity of Mahdi? Decrease of level of calculation during time trouble?

A new opening in the repertoire nearly always leads to imprecise moves in the opening, and eyes blinking. Blundering a piece too early by Tarak Moudallal against Faisal Khairallah was like giving the current champion a rest day. No psycho stability? Or increase in Faisal’s composure?

Increase in frequency of time trouble of Samir Sursock led him to the loss of a pawn against Elie Asmar, and the game. Is it the age factor?

And finally, the last game to finish after 5 hours play was AbdelAziz Mahmoud – Ralph Khairallah. AbdelAziz won after a long maneuvering game, where Ralph adopted a waiting policy, allowing the former to seize the initiative in the endgame. Although Ralph constructed a very promising middle game position, he didn’t worry his opponent with any real threat. Waiting passively means losing. Lack of experience of the young player?

Can the author of this book (see below) answer all those questions?

Time will tell.
