Arab Individual Championship – Dubai 2021 – Round 7

Round 7: A wild round

This is the least description that came to my mind to describe this round. You could add (crazy), (unbelievable), (stunning), etc. Just look at the moves played by not only the Lebanese players, but also by his opponents. The engine was switching his evaluation after each half-move from equal, to clear advantage to white, to clear advantage to Black, then clear equal, then winning for White, followed by mat in 7 for Black, etc. and the loop continues.

I will start with Maya’s game, who played the King’s Indian defense against her Libyan opponent Salema AbulSlam. In a need for a win, Maya complicated as much as she can the position. When the Lybian player tried to extinguish her opponent’s initiative by offering the exchange of queens, Maya was up to the task, profited from the former mistaken move, to net a rook, and the game point.

Amr’s game against the Syrian FM Malek Koniahli was also complicated. With nearly each move, the advantage was passing from one side to another. It was the Syrian player who made the last mistake, when Amr’s final move forced the former to stop the clock.

I can’t say the same about Faisal’s game against the Bahraini FM Maher Ayyad. It was just one move that led to Faisal loss. He missed his opponent’s bishop move, which is a rare case, in his calculation. As I know Faisal and how much his fighting spirit is high, I am sure he will recover in the remaining 2 rounds.

Akram’s game against the Syrian IM Bashir Eiti was very interesting from a strategic point of view. He started with a strong initiative on the queen side, while the Syrian player was accumulating his forces in the center and on the kingside. Some passive play by Akram gave Bashir Eiti the free hand to attack the white king. The later sacrificed his rook for the knight, the only piece that defended the king, then brought his remaining forces for the attack. As the white king was going to be mated or heavy materials loss can’t be avoided, Akram stopped the clock to reduce his pain.
