ZONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2011

Zone 3.1 Round 9

Amr ElJawich : the new Lebanese Federal Master

UAE GM Salem AbdelRahaman Sole leader

Ghader Pour Shayesteh : Winner of the women Section on tie-Break, and the bronze for Kanarik

The final round of the zone 3.1 concluded with nearly no changes in the top standing of the previous round, where all the leaders won their corresponding games. The UAE GM Salem AbdelRahman, playing with the black pieces, won over the Iraqi FM Ali Leith, the winner over the Qatari GM Nasser ElSayyed from the previous round, securing the first place of the zonal tournament, and the last ticket to World Cup, which will be held at Khanty Mansiysk  in Seberia next month. The same happened with the Iranian GM Ihsan GhaemMakami , the Iranian IM Pouria Darini and the Jordanian IM Sami ElSafarini, when they beat the Bahraini Hussein Ayyad, the Yemeni FM Hatem ElHadarani and the Lebanese CM Amr ElJawish correspondingly, though the later loss didn’t affect his result by securing the Fide Master title, which he rightly deserve for his level of play.

The same scenario occurred in the Women section, where the Iranian leaders WIMs Ghader Pour Shayesteh and Ghazal Hakimifard won over their opponents the UAR WFM Amna Noaman and the Syrian Afamia ElMir correspondingly, putting Shayesteh as the winner due the tie-break.

Those wins killed all hopes for our player WIM Knarik Moradian from a break-through to the top, and was satisfied by her win over the Jordanian WIM Lougain Dahdan, and a clear third place.

Zone 3.1 – Round 8

Amr beats GM KaemMakami with the black pieces !!

UAE GM Salem Abdel Rahman : the Sole leader !

What a round! In chess, everything is possible. All the leaders in the Men section after the 7th round were pushed back, and replaced by a sole one: UAE GM Salem AbdelRahman. He beat, with the white pieces, one of the x-leader: the Jordanian IM Sami El-Safarini, while the other x-leader, the Iranian IM Pouria Darini lost with the black pieces to the Iraqi Ali Leith.

But the main surprise came from the second board: The Iranian GM Ihsan KaemMakami was playing white against the Lebanese CM Amr ElJawish. And as more than 460 Elo points difference exists, everyone expected a quick finish for the Iranian GM, who last year beat the legendary Karpov in a training match!! But Amr was well prepared, and a classical King’s Indian Defense emerged on the board, with White adopting the g3 system. Ihsan kept the normal issued advantage of the variation played, pressed in the middle game. But this cost a lot of time. Amr was holding tied. As a result of too ambitious moves by White, a weak move was played by him, onto which Amr jumped to catch this unique opportunity, by a lovely sacrifice of his knight, and a tactical combination resulted in wining more materials, and the game.

All those events opened the door for the UAE GM AbdelRahman to take the sole lead at the end of this round. This means that the next round, the final, will be very tense and critical for the top standings.

Meanwhile, Kanarik Moradian, the Lebanese WIM, managed only to draw with the black pieces, and with difficulties, against the UAE WIM Nora Saleh. This draw put her on third place with 5.5 points in the after-Round8 standing with difference of 1 point from the Iranian leaders, Ghader and Hakimifard.

Zone 3.1 – Round 7

Amr drew with GM AlSayed

3 players lead in the Men section

Round 7 was decisive on nearly every board in the Men section of the Asian zonal. On board 1, The Jordanian IM Sami ElSafarini beat the highest rated of the tournament the Iranian GM Ihsan KaemMakami, to join him in the lead, with the other Iranian IM Pouria Darini who drew his game with the Qatari IM Hussein Aziz Nezad.

While the Emirati GM Salem Abdel Rahman was beating the other Iranian IM Sayed Alavi, his compatriot Omar Noaman , playing also white, was lost in his game with the Iraqi FM Ali Leith.

On board 3, nearly everyone was expecting a quick win for the Qatari GM Nasser ElSayed over the Lebanese CM Amr ElJawish. A stubborn play by the later forced the former to show his full power and experience, and even reached a position with clear advantage. But this cost the GM a lot of time, which forced him to sacrifice some his advantage. Amr took his chances, created counter chances with his central pawns and a magnificent centralized night, to even create some winning chances. The mutual time trouble forced both players to agree to draw.

In the Women section, the fight for the first place was taking rage between the Lebanese WIM Kanarik Moradian , as white, and the Iranian WIM Shayesteh Ghadir Pour. The Iranian player profited from some imprecise moves in the middle game, to create a passed pawn on the a-file, which forced Kanarik to sacrifice her bishop for it, to reach an ending some some chances to draw. And it reached it, but time trouble has started again taking effect, forcing Kanarik to resign after a marathon game, with the highest number of moves played so far in both sections.

Zone 3.1 – Round 6

Kanarik in the lead !!

It was a nice round for the Lebanese WIM Kanarik Moradian. With black pieces, she beat the Syrian player Afamia ElmirMahmoud, who played some poor moves, which allowed to Kanarik a great development advantage, transformed  to  an attack on Afamia’s king. On the  other hand, the x-leader the Iranian WIM Ghader Pour Shayesteh lost also, with the White pieces,  to UAE WIM Nora Saleh. This loss pushed away Ghader from the top rank, which is now occupied by 2 players: Kamarik and the other Iranian  WIM Ghazal Hakimifard with 5 points each.

In the Men section, the Iranian GM Ihsan KaemMakami, playing white,  beat the Emirati GM Salem AbdelRahman. Ihsan played the solid English Opening, and Salem replied with the King’s Indian formation in order to have a complicated fight. But Ihsan played firm and solid, snatched a pawn , then another one in the ending then signed his win over Salem.

On board two, the battle was taking rage between the Iranian IM Pourina Darini and the Qatari GM Nasser ElSayed. A complicated Najdorf  lead to complicated middle game in which the former emerged with exchange up and covert it to a win. This also pushed away the Qatari GM from the lead, to let the Iranian GM KaemMakami to be the sole leader.

In the meantime, the Lebanese Champion CM Amr ElJawish was playing very well against the Bahraini Hussein Ayyad and took the advantage. But due to time pressure, he let it go, to finish with just an extra pawn .But Ayayd succeeded in constructing a blockade position, with an active king, which lead to finish the game peacefully.

Zone 3.1 – Round 5

KaemMakami joined the lead and a bright day for the Lebanese players

Kanarik in the lead !!

The early morning round 5 of the zone witnessed a huge battle on the leading boards. The Emirati Salem Abdelrahman, who conducted the black pieces on first board, played very aggressively the Tarrasch  against the Qatari GM Nassser ElSayed,  and they reach a complicated battle where no one knows whom is attacking whom. After the smoke was cleared after a heavy exchanges of pieces and pawns, a leveled endgame emerged, followed by a draw agreement.

On board 2, the other UAE player Oman Noaman , playing white, tried to complicate the position against the Iranian GM Ihsan KaemMakani, and sacirified the exchange to secure a passed pawn on the queenside. But he miscalculated, and he technique of the Iranian player had the last word.

On the Lebanese side, it was a bright morning round, were both Lebanese players scored the full point against their opponents. CM Amor ElJawich played an aggressive king’s indian  , where his Kuwaiti opponent, playing white, declined to castle, and the later was smashed. Meanwhile, WIM Kanarik Moradian beat her experienced Iraqi opponent  WIM Iman AlRifai in a alm way. The Iraqi player tried to attack too late where Kanarik has already secured the advantage on the queenside, pushed away the attack, and scored her point.

Zone 3.1 – Round 4

Peace at top boards

A peaceful draw was the result of the top board between the Qatari GM Nasser ElSayed  and his opponent the Iranian GM Ihsan KaemMakami, where a nimzo-indian – Capablanca variation was played. One weakness at e6 was not enough to cause problem to the Iranian player, and he hold it easily.

The same happened on board 2 between the Iranian IM Pouria Darini and the UAE GM Salem abdulRahman, where the Iranian player avoided the big main line 9.h3 thus allowing Salem to play the active-equalizer Bg4, and after a series of exchanges , the remaining materials on the nearly empty board spoke of themselves.

This gave the opportunity the Jordanian IM Sami Khodr ElSafarini, driving the black pieces,  to beat the UAE player Mohamed Ibrahim Khoury  using the Winaver/Nimzowitsch variation , and thus joining the leaders.

Lebanese wise, our Candidate Master Amro ElJawich opened his score by beating his Syrian opponent Abdelqaker ElRifai , and with the Black pieces , where white adopted a dubious variation against Amro’s Najdorf, where Amr hold the advantage all the time, and after a tactical exchanges, Amr emerged with an extra rook for 2 passed pawns, but his active king and pieces coordination  had the last word.

On the Women, section, our player International Master Kanarik Moradian  over stretched with  her attack on her Iranian opponent  IM Ghazal Hakimifard ‘s king, where the later was very well defended.  Kanarik sacrificed a pawn to complicate her opponent’s task, but finished by weakening her king’ shelter which was the cause of her defit.

Zone 3.1 – Round 2

Kanarik  continues its wining series, and Amr held the draw

The attack was the common theme of the most round 2 games of the Asian zone, held at Sharjah,  UAE with a time control 90 minutes for the first 40 moves , followed by 30 minutes to finish the game, with increment of 30 seconds per move.

In the Men section, the Iranian Grand Master Ihsan KaemMakami gave his opponent a strategic lesson, having the (cool chess) and (simple chess) as common themes, while the other UAE-UAE clash , between Grand Master Salem AbdelRahman , playing white, and his compatriot Omar Nohman, saw a battle of attacking moves, where the former technique and calculation prevails.

On the other hand, our player Candidate Master Amr ElJawich held the draw in his game with the experienced Yemeni Fide Master Hatem El Hadarani, and was up to the situation when Amr pointed out to the weakness on d6 in his opponent’s position, which forced Hatem to defend and not taking any risk.

In the Women Section, the Woman International Master Kanarik ,having Black, played with fire, and tried to construct an attack against her UAE Woman Fide Master Amna Nouman. Amna defended well, and even , at a certain moment , she chould repealed the attack with advantage, but missed the precise moves to do it. Kanarik collected her opponent’s pawns shield at the cost of a knight, to reach a complicated endgame, and continued aggressively with the remaining pieces having the motto (the King is a strong piece in the endgame) in her mind and succeeded in breaking the defense of her  opponent and collected more materials, which forced the resignation of the White player.

Zone 3.1 – Round 1

The  Zone 3.1 , which is held in Sharjah  – UAE, showed no surprises in the opening round, except the UAE-UAE clash in the Men section between the FM Mohammad Ibrahim Khouri and the young GM Salem AbdulRahman, where the former was trying to get his revenge for the loss caused by Salem , just few days ago during the UAE individual championship, wherethe former  got a winning position in a classical Silcilian , handled very badly by Salem till Khouri blundered and  lost. But here, both players improved their game and, as the game was very animated by attack , defense and counter-attack. Salem sacrificed a pawn to weaken the opponent’s kink protection, but Khoury defended well, and started some counter-sacrifice on the opposite side, which leveled the game and ended peacefully.  This result  is considered as a failure for Salem who dropped half a point at the start of the tournament, with a difference of 300 Elo points from his opponent.

Lebanese wise. Amr , playing with  the black pieces, lost to IM Hussein Aziz Nezad from Qatar. It was a tough battle, where Amr was up to the occasion, and played very  the opening, and  got good chances to have a certain edge at the queen side in the middle game. But this cost  him a lot of time, and entered the last 20 minutes in time crisis, which affected his chosen moves, till a blunder occurred.

On the other hand, Knarik , having white, took revenge for Amr by beating her Qatari opponent Salama ElKheleifi , though Salama equalized easily in the opponent, but  one or 2 imprecise moves caused her a pawn loss, then the technique of our player prevailed.
