Round 2 of the Arab Elite Chess Championship 2011: Fire on all boards

I don’t know what the players took at breakfast, but fire was on all boards of this early morning round 2 of the Arab Elite championship. Starting with the first board, a Bogo-Indian defense by Ahmed Adly, as Black, against Sami Khader turned into an attack. After 24 h3, Adly played:

24..Rxh4, with huge complications, to reach after black’s 30 moves the following position:

Sami played 31 Rxf4, returning the favor. Although White remained a pawn up, the game ended in 3 repetition-moves draw.

Another exchange sacrifice occurred on board 2 between the Yemeni IM Zendan Al-Zendani (White) and the Emirati GM Salem AbdelRahman, where, in a typical Sicilian middle game, the players reached the following position after white’s 16th move:

The young GM played: 16 Rxf3?! 17 Nxf3 Nxf3 with great complications, where the board is full of firework. Zendan hold the attack, and the materials, till he missed on move 22 the strong Bh3! (instead of the weak Bf2?), entering time trouble, to throw away the point and Salem took it as a nice compensation for his creative play.

Fadi Eid, playing black against the Morocco IM Mohamad Tissir, adopted its specialty, the Nimzowisch defense, reaching the following position after Black’s 19th move:

Tisir played: 20 Nxc7 winning back the pawn. Both players entered a double-rook endgame, with a slight advantage for White. But Fadi defended well, and the point was split between them.

Not satisfied with the previous sacrifices? Here comes a creative one from Mohamad ElModiahki, as White, against Samir Mohamad, and also from Sicilian defense:

White played: 24 Ncd5?! And Black conserved the extra piece, though great complications arose on the board to reach the following position, with Black to play:

55 ..Nxb5 And a draw was soon agreed, as Black is ready to sacrifice his knight for the h-pawn, while the king will take care of the a-one.

Not satisfied?! Here another hot one between the Bahraini FM Hussein Ayyad (White) and the Tunisian FM Kamel Njili, who reached the following position after Black’s 17th move: b4

18 Nd5! (yes you guess it: a Sicilian classical sac)

Then 2 moves later:

20 Rxe7!! And after some resistance from the Black side, which was in vein, White won.

More?! Ok. To calm you down a little bit, the following position is reached after the 33rd Black move between the Palestinian Attallah Tamra (White) and the Kuwaiti Badr Al-Hageri:

White played: 34 Qxe8!! To reach an ending where the 2 rooks were better than the queen and the a-pawn run was a decisive factor.

Though the 7th board game between the Sudanic Yaaqoub Rashid (White) and Osman Daoua from Moritania, didn’t witness any sacrifice, but it was full of attacking ideas, not less than the games mentioned above.

Let’s wait and see what the chief of the restaurant has prepared for the players for lunch.
